Empowering SNAP Shoppers: Instacart and SNAP Partnership

Exciting News!
As of Wednesday, 12/13/2023, Instacart has unveiled an expanded collaboration with Kroger to enhance SNAP online purchasing choices. SNAP is Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

SNAP provides food benefits to low-income families to supplement their grocery budget so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.

This collaboration move encompasses all Kroger-associated stores such as Ralphs, Foods Co, Fry’s, Jay C, Pay Less, and Food 4 Less, now accessible through the Instacart platform.

With this development, SNAP recipients will soon gain access to over 1,600 Kroger locations through Instacart. This broadened availability spans various Kroger banners, enabling shoppers at Ralphs, Foods Co, Jay C, Pay Less, and Fry’s to utilize Instacart.

Starting this 12/15/2023, Food 4 Less customers in California, Illinois, and Indiana can also use their SNAP benefits for online shopping through Instacart.

This expansion aligns strategically with the winter holiday season, and Instacart emphasizes its commitment to assisting families in overcoming transportation barriers while optimizing their food budgets. Sarah Mastrorocco, Vice President and General Manager of Health at Instacart, expressed this sentiment in a blog post.

Kroger's recent decision to accept EBT cards for pickup and delivery orders across all its stores, following a successful test during the pandemic, laid the groundwork for this collaboration. In April, Kroger Delivery started accepting EBT payments for online orders, marking a significant step in its partnership with automated fulfillment company Ocado.

This latest move is another significant step in Instacart's ongoing efforts to pioneer the acceptance of EBT cards online for SNAP participants. With the Kroger expansion, Instacart now extends SNAP acceptance to over 130 retail banners and 12,000 stores across all states and Washington, D.C., reaching almost 95% of the 42 million people enrolled in the benefits program.

At the close of last year, Instacart introduced a discounted version of its Instacart+ membership for SNAP participants, aiming to provide greater flexibility, convenience, and choice. Sarah Mastrorocco highlighted this commitment, stating, "We want to give SNAP recipients the ability to choose from a variety of retailers based on what works best for their families, offering greater flexibility, convenience, and the dignity of choice."
